Exhibiting Artists

Hai Tien is an artist unique in many ways.

She is one of the very few contemporary Chinese artists of her generation who trained overseas before China was opened to the western world in 1979. As a teenager she studied art in her native Shanghai before continuing her training in Hong Kong and then New York, where she attended the School of Visual Art and was awarded a scholarship to study at The Cooper Union. She graduated a BFA from Cooper Union in 1969.

This early exposure to western contemporary art and its roots, combined with her Chinese heritage and abiding interest in Chinese culture, has imbued her art with an intriguing and highly original fusion of east and west that has international appeal.

To the viewer, a painting by Hai Tien resonates with a rare and exciting vitality that never fails to surprise and inspire. Her courageous use of colour and innate understanding of form and dimension impart an energy that becomes more apparent with every passing day. Her unexpected diversity of styles reveals an artist who is not content to stand still; her view of the world and her art continues to evolve beyond visual experience.

Since the 1970’s Hai Tien has held solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group shows in Hong Kong and overseas. Her works have been sought after and acquired by museums and private and corporate collectors around the world.

Gallery on Old Bailey now presents Hai Tien’s most recent ground-breaking paintings, each of which represents another step on her continuing journey toward enlightenment.
