Born in 1965, YAN Lei has risen one of the most outrageous, influential and prominent Chinese contemporary artists in China. The works of the Hebei province native is an extended commentary on the structure and function of the global art world as it relates to his own career and to China more generally. YAN creates insightful works that analyze the relationships between contemporary artists, like himself and their curator, collector and fellow artist.
A graduate of the Zhejiang Academy, his work was first shown in 1989 in“China Avant-garde”at the China National Art Museum in Beijing.
Since then, his works have been exhibited all over the world including Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, USA, Paris, Amsterdam and Italy, Brazil and Switerzland. His works had been included in the First Guangzhou Triennale, the 25th Sao Paulo Biennale as well as the 50th Venice Biennale. In 2003, his work was shown in“Alors, La China?”at the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
He had held solo exhibitions in Hong Kong, Switzerland and Beijing.
YAN has recently become one of the top-rated artists to take part at the Documenta X in Kassel, Germany the coming June.
