Paul Butler lives and works in Winnipeg, Canada. He has exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art. Los Angeles; Justina M. Barnicke Gallery, Hart House, University of Toronto; White Columns, New York City; Creative Growth Art Centre, Oakland and Sparwasser HQ, Berlin. His curatorial projects have included the works by Matthew Higgs, Mitzi Pederson, Harrell Fletcher, DearRaindrop and Guy Maddin. He has contributed writings to the book Decentre: Concerning Artist-run Culture (2008) and to the magazine Canadian Art (2008).
Below is his artist statement on the collage series titled the “World Without Fashion” that is included in the 21 Dreams exhibit at Gallery on Old Bailey:
The World Without Fashion series is proposal for a society without vanity. By removing the human form, my hope is for the viewer to put themselves in the position of that subject, and question how they view themselves; how we view our surroundings, in relation to ourselves.
Let’s remove the object of material desire, and question or propose the formulation of and focus on other values.
